44 / Middle School Phys Ed Teacher / STRONGCAMP New England / Married 20 years with 2 kids
Carolyn has competed in 5k, 10k and overnight races. She currently competes in FAP Figure and Bikini Competitions, and has placed in the top 3 in almost every show she’s attended. We couldn’t take our eyes off her at STRONGCAMP New England.
Why did you sign up for STRONGCAMP?
I read each issue of STRONG magazine that featured a write up about STRONGCAMP, and I’d say to myself, “This is a perfect opportunity for me to be with like-minded women, and expand my thirst for fitness knowledge. As soon as this camp comes close to me, I am there!!” The day New England registration opened, I signed up.
All my life I have been active either on a team or in fitness. Now, my life is dedicated to fitness. It’s exhilarating to be surrounded by fitness-minded women who love life and possess a strong spirit, mind and body. It’s contagious and I want to be able to emulate that. I knew I would be surrounded by that at STRONGCAMP.
What was your favorite part of the STRONGCAMP weekend?
Honestly, I loved the entire weekend but if I had to pick, there’s 2 highlights that come to mind. First, the workouts! During each workout I felt an energy come alive inside me that I have never felt before. I pushed my mind and body to a whole new level. Was I tired, sore and super sweaty? Absolutely! But looking around the gym during those workouts and seeing the rest of the group pushing and fighting through, just fueled my desire to succeed even more. It’s amazing what your body can do when you want something bad enough. The second highlight is the time the group spent together after our last workout on Saturday when we shared our answers to the question, “What Does Strong Mean to Me?” This section was powerful. Each woman that volunteered to share her answer not only answered the question, she told us about her personal journey, she shared her story, her why. We shed tears, we hugged, we supported one another unconditionally. That is what strong means to me.
What was the most valuable lesson or technique you learned (training or otherwise)?
Your mind is a powerful tool! Stepping into the Crossfit gym on the first day was empowering. I felt excited, nervous, alive, strong and more motivated than ever to take on a new challenge. I love the lifestyle I live. Continuing to be challenged, encouraged, complimented and learning to embrace camaraderie with other fit women solidifies that I can do anything I put my mind to.
Who is your biggest supporter?
My husband Kevin! Every challenge I tackle, he along with our 2 handsome boys, are right there by my side with motivation, encouragement, love and support. Two years ago I decided to expand my training. I put running road races on the back burner to try something new and different. I was a little hesitant at first but with Kevin’s encouragement, I chose to train for and compete in my first figure competition! I was SO excited! This was something I’ve wanted to do for the last 10 years but I never possessed enough confidence to act on it. But he believed in me. His words kept going through my mind: “Go for it, you will do great!” When I stepped on that stage for the first time, I knew I made the right decision!
What are your future plans?
I feel I have created a solid base for my love of fitness, but there is always room to grow and expand my knowledge.
I definitely see myself continuing to compete in figure and bikini competitions! I also plan on adding certifications to my portfolio in the fields of fitness, health and life coaching. I want to continue to be a positive role model to my family, students and peers. One of my long term goals is to reach out to the younger female generation and help them build confidence, self-esteem and create a healthy mindset.
